2021 Gary Slaight Music Humanitarian Award

CANADIAN PACIFIC HOLIDAY TRAIN TO BE
CELEBRATED AS 2021 RECIPIENT OF GARY SLAIGHT MUSIC HUMANITARIAN AWARD

AWARD TO BE PRESENTED AT COUNTRY MUSIC WEEK 2021 IN LONDON, ON

TORONTO, ON (September 15, 2021) — The Canadian Country Music Association® (CCMA®) Board of Directors proudly announced today that the Canadian Pacific Holiday Train, an important community initiative established by Canadian Pacific, has been selected as the 2021 recipient of the Gary Slaight Music Humanitarian Award. Now in its 23rd year, the CP Holiday Train is North America’s largest rolling food bank fundraiser and will be celebrated for its incredible success during Country Music Week 2021 in London, ON.

“I’d like to thank the CCMA for naming the Humanitarian Award in my honour and want to congratulate the CP Holiday Train as its first recipient,” said Gary Slaight, President and CEO, Slaight Communication Inc.. “The CP Holiday Train champions two causes which I am very passionate about; helping those in our communities in times of need as well as supporting and promoting Canadian Artists and their music. I look forward to seeing their campaign come to life this year.”

Established in 1999, the CP Holiday Train is an important community initiative for the company and a program that its over 12,000-strong CP family showcases with pride. Initially conceived as a way for CP to give back to the communities where it operated across its network in North America, the CP Holiday Train program has now raised more than C$19.4 million and 4.9 million pounds of food.

“Our entire CP family is deeply honoured to receive the Gary Slaight Music Humanitarian Award. Since 1999, the CP Holiday Train program has helped raise funds and donations for food banks throughout North America,” said Keith Creel, CP President and CEO. “Every year, this beautifully illuminated train travels across Canada and the U.S., stopping in communities along our network and bringing people together in the spirit of celebration and giving. We love being a part of these communities, and we are proud to support local food banks along the way.”

With food insecurity on the rise in many North American communities, the CP Holiday Train program focuses greatly on raising the profile of local food banks and their ongoing need for support throughout the season. Making stops in more than 170 communities each year, the CP Holiday Train encourages local communities to graciously donate (food or money) in exchange for attendance to a free concert. Featuring some of the biggest names in music, the CP Holiday Train has seen performances by Terri Clark, Jim Cuddy, Dallas Smith, The Moffatts, Great Big Sea, Patricia Conroy, Sheryl Crow, Johnny Reid and Sarah McLachlan among many others. Bringing artists and fans together in one of the most unique concert settings, each CP Holiday Train stop allows communities to rally in the battle against hunger, all while celebrating the best talent in North America.

“We feel so privileged to be able to highlight the incredible work that Canadian Pacific does year-round to make this massive annual fundraiser possible,” explained Amy Jeninga, President, CCMA. “Understanding the increased need for food banks across North America, we couldn’t think of a more deserving initiative — one that helps communities feed themselves through generosity and brings people together over a shared love of music. Congratulations to everyone at CP for this very deserved accolade.”

With planning for the 2021 CP Holiday Train Program already underway, Canadians are encouraged to visit cpr.ca/holiday-train to keep up with 2021 stop announcements.

2021 Country Music Hall of Fame Inductees

CANADIAN COUNTRY MUSIC ASSOCIATION® ANNOUNCES
2021 CANADIAN COUNTRY MUSIC HALL OF FAME™ INDUCTEES

VETERAN LABEL EXECUTIVE RANDY STARK
RECEIVES STAN KLEES BUILDER HONOUR

AWARD-WINNING PERFORMER PATRICIA CONROY
ANNOUNCED AS 2021 ARTIST INDUCTEE

September 9th, 2021 (Toronto, ON) — The Canadian Country Music Association® (CCMA) is proud to announce that Patricia Conroy and Randy Stark have been selected as the 2021 inductees into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame™.

“I was so thrilled to learn that Patricia and Randy are to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame this year,” said Amy Jeninga, President, CCMA. “They have both been trailblazers throughout their careers and I look forward to celebrating this career milestone as a part of Country Music Week this year.”

A 7-time CCMA Award winner, Patricia Conroy’s illustrious career began in Montreal as a member of her family band, The Shamrock Ceili Band. Influenced by her mother’s Maritime country background and her father’s Irish roots, Conroy’s distinct sound laid the foundation for her 6 studio albums, 7 JUNO Award nominations, 5 #1 CMT videos and 8 career #1 singles.

Throughout her musical career, songwriting has always been an integral part of Conroy’s success. From her debut album Blue Angel, written largely herself, it became apparent songwriting was in her blood. She went on to craft hits like “Direction of Love,” “Keep Me Rockin,” “Bad Day for Trains,” “I Don’t Wanna Be the One” and many more. Touring extensively throughout her career, Conroy has also spent a great deal of her life sharing her incredible talents with others. In the past decade alone, she has lent her award-winning songwriting skills to artists such as Jimmy Rankin (The Rankin Family), Michelle Wright, Reba McEntire, Trisha Yearwood and Lady A, proving her position as one of Canada’s top female artists and songwriters.

“This is such a magical moment in my career,” expressed Conroy. “I’m full of emotion and beyond grateful for this incredible honour. So looking forward to celebrating with everyone in person this November!!”

With more than 5 decades of industry experience, Randy Stark has been credited with building some of Canada’s biggest country careers. Beginning his work at London Records in Calgary (1972), Stark went on to hold positions at a handful of labels, including A&M Records and GRT, before landing at Warner Music Canada in 1980. Here, Stark earned the title of VP, Marketing and Promotion where he was responsible for a country roster that included George Fox, Paul Brandt, Patricia Conroy, The Johner Brothers and alt-country icons Blue Rodeo. During his tenure at Warner Music Canada these acts alone accounted for over 2.5 million units sold, 13 JUNO Awards, 15 CCMA Awards, 33 Top 10 singles, 10 #1 singles, 11 BCCMA Awards and 17 SCMA Awards.

Acting as both CCMA Director (1997-2003) and CCMA President (2000-2002), Stark has always believed strongly in the potential of independent artists. Launching Stark Ravings Management in 2000, Stark provided career management for Canadian artists Jason Blaine, Diane Chase, Jake Mathews and Kylee Epp, working with longtime friend Ed Harris to manage the early careers of Aaron Pritchett and Lisa Hewitt. Over the course of its history, Stark Ravings Management earned more than 30 Top 10 singles for independent artists in addition to dozens of client nominations for various CCMA Awards.

Owning and operating his own radio charting service (Trax Report, 2007-2018), Stark also played a recognizable role in the radio careers of artists such as Deric Ruttan, Gord Bamford, Bobby Wills, Michelle Wright, Aaron Pritchett and Clayton Bellamy, among others. His dedication to providing Canadian artists with an international stage was evident in his roles as Australian Contemporary Country Music Coalition Director (2001-2003), CMA Nashville Director (2001-2003) and as a valued consultant for CMT Canada (2002-2003).

Joining the Country Music Association of Ontario Board of Directors in 2012, Stark has spent the duration of his career behind the scenes, building opportunities for artists at all levels of their careers.

“I’m honoured to be chosen as this year’s inductee into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame, Builder category,” said Stark. “For me, it’s never been about personal recognition or accolades, I simply tried to do the best I could for my artists and clients. To be recognized by my peers and the Canadian Country Music industry is a very humbling experience and I shall accept this award with all of you in mind.”

Inductees of the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame are chosen annually by a selected Hall of Fame Electors Committee, composed of over seventy (70) industry peers. The next three-stage voting process will take place March — May 2022. The inductee in the Builder category receives the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame Stan Klees Builder Award, established in recognition of RPM Magazine co-founder, Mr. Stan Klees, and his pioneering efforts in the creation of the CCMA Awards Program.

The Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place during Country Music Week 2021 in London, ON from November 26 — 29, 2021.

CCMA Hall of Fame Moving to the National Music Centre

CANADIAN COUNTRY MUSIC HALL OF FAME

MOVES TO CALGARY’S NATIONAL MUSIC CENTRE

CALGARY, AB (September 8, 2021) — The Canadian Country Music Association® (CCMA®) is pleased to announce that the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame (CCMHF) has relocated to Calgary, finding its permanent location at Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre. Established in 1984 to honour Canadian Artists and Builders who have made long-term contributions to the growth and development of Canadian country music, the CCMHF will soon be open for public viewing.

“We continue to be so proud of the history behind our genre in Canada,” explained Amy Jeninga, President, CCMA. “Alberta has been an incredible partner for the CCMA, hosting the CCMA Awards 15 times since 1977, and we couldn’t think of a better home for our growing collection than the National Music Centre. We look forward to being able to visit soon.”

Consisting of more than 1270 artifacts, including instruments and memorabilia (textiles, awards, photographs) and representing over 150 different artists, the CCMHF celebrates two inductees annually — a performing artist and an industry builder. Inductees into the Hall of Fame are selected by their Canadian peers in the industry and celebrated during Country Music Week every fall.

“There isn’t a better home for the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame than Calgary, a city in the province of Alberta with a tremendous history, legacy and appreciation for country music, and strong ties to the country music industry,” said Andrew Mosker, President and CEO of NMC. “Since 2009, the National Music Centre has worked in collaboration with the Canadian Country Music Association to showcase items from the Hall of Fame at Studio Bell. NMC has proudly served as the collection’s caretaker for over a decade, and we’re thrilled to be entrusted to care for it permanently as its official home. Through onsite exhibitions, collections and programs, we look forward to celebrating the legacies of Canada’s country icons for many years to come.”

Including items from Anne Murray (personalized guitar), Ian Tyson (cowboy boots, saddles and rope) and Terri Clark (early guitar), among others, the CCMHF collection is currently on display as part of the Homegrown Country exhibition that runs until 2022 at Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre. Country music fans are asked to stay tuned for more details regarding the unveiling of a new CCMHF at Studio Bell in the future.
